About the Event
Print media journalism is in crisis in Germany. Local journalism is particularly affected. Subscriptions are declining, readers - especially the younger ones - are turning to online media. Circulations are falling, newspapers are thinning out their reporting or discontinuing their work. The quality of reporting is declining. Media diversity is declining. This is a worrying development for democracy, which must rely on education through high-quality media.
But the crisis is accepted as a challenge in the industry. In order to save quality journalism, publishing houses and journalists are developing new concepts and alternative financing models. New online media are emerging. However, the ways out of the crisis are difficult, especially for local journalism. Which innovative approaches are currently being tried or proving successful? What conditions must be met? What framework conditions would politics have to set, while strictly respecting the freedom of the press, in order to improve the chances of preserving quality journalism and media diversity, especially on a local level? The panellists will address these and other questions.
