The terms we use to describe the state of society draw our attention to transformation processes that have the potential for profound changes. The way we describe society is very often focused on data. For example, the “Gesellschaft der Daten [Society of Data]” (Süssenguth 2015), the “Datafied Society” (Schäfer/van Es 2017) and the “revolution that will transform how we live, work and think” (Mayer-Schönberger/Cukier 2013).
In her lecture,
Wiebke Loosen looks at the datafication of society from the perspective of journalism, which particularly qualifies as a “case study” because it shows the profound transformation of public communication. Using a typology of four types of datafied journalism – (1) Data Journalism, (2) Algorithmed Journalism, (3) Automated Journalism and (4) Metrics-Driven Journalism – Wiebke Loosen shows how journalism "reacts" to the datafied society and, at the same time, is a driving force behind datafication.
