The ‘Nachwuchstag’ [Day Dedicated to Young Researchers] organised by the
German Communication Association (DGPuK) will take place from 6 to 8 September 2018. This ‘Nachwuchstag’ is an event for young communication and media scientists in German-speaking countries, which has been taking place every two years since 2012. Practical knowledge of everyday university life in the fields of communication and media studies is vividly conveyed on various levels (MA, PhD and Postdoc). Bredow researcher
Prof. Dr. Wiebke Loosen will participate in two panel discussion at this event:
Perspektiven und Finanzierungsmöglichkeiten in der Wissenschaft [Perspectives and Funding Opportunities in Science]
At first glance, the proportion of women in communication and media studies is quite high. Especially among students and PhD students, this proportion is in some cases even higher than the proportion of men. However, after the PhD, a noticeable cooling out process takes place and male colleagues continue to be the dominant professorial group. Four scientists who have chosen the field of science, will talk at the panel discussion. They will speak about their experiences, their enthusiasm but also about obstacles on the way to different fields of work as editors, senior researchers or professors. With Claudia Czycholl, an expert in PhD consulting will give her assessment of obstacles and opportunities of women on the career path of science.

Karriereperspektiven nach der Promotion [Career Prospects after the PhD]
It often seems that the decision to go for a PhD follows a path that inevitably leads to the field of science which must end with a professorship. In reality, however, only a fraction of PhD students remains in the academic world. Even smaller is the proportion of those who actually become professors. At this panel discussion, alternatives to a professorship as the ultimate career goal will be presented. After completing their PhD in communications and media studies, the participants of this discussion have pursued careers in the scientific or science-related field and talk about their decisions, experiences and scope of activities.
