The corona pandemic is currently putting international law to the test. How can the crisis caused by this pandemic be alleviated through global cooperation and solidarity? The 1. Digitale Völkerrechtssalon [First Digital Salon on International Law] is organised and moderated by Erika de Wet (Graz/Bonn) and
Matthias C. Kettemann (Hamburg/Berlin/Graz).
On Thursday, 4 June 2020, 5 p.m. - 6.30 p.m. - via Skype for Business - registration by e-mail to manuela.rusz @ uni-graz.at
Programme
Modern international law is an international law of cooperation. It is particularly put to the test in crises. Pandemics require not only cooperation between states, but also in science. Nevertheless, factual measures, legal restrictions and political discourse often remain at the national level. Against this background, the 1. Digitale Völkerrechtssalon deals with important questions:
- How can cooperation function when states isolate themselves and traffic and travel flows are interrupted?
- How should international solidarity and multilateralism be promoted in the sense of the GM Resolution A/RES/74/270 of 3 April 2020?
- How can human rights be protected when implementing COVID-19 measures?
- How can we generate the necessary knowledge, enable "technology pooling" in accordance with international law and make good decisions even in times of uncertainty and a lack of knowledge?
- How can trade flows be sustainably revived and investments fairly protected?
- And what special challenges were posed in the largest recall in Austria's history?
Answers to these questions will be given by:
- Prof. Dr. Erika de Wet, LL.M. (Harvard) (Graz/Bonn): Corona und das Völkerrecht [Corona and International Law]
- PD Mag. Dr. Matthias C. Kettemann, LL.M. (Harvard) (Hamburg/Berlin/Graz): Corona und die Menschenrechte [Corona and Human Rights]
- Prof. Mag. Dr. Iris Eisenberger, M.Sc. (LSE) (Graz): Regulierung in Corona-Zeiten: Innovation, Vorsorge und Risiken [Regulation in Corona Times: Innovation, Precaution and Risks]
- Prof. Mag. Dr. Michael Waibel, M.Sc. (LSE), LL.M. (Harvard), MA (Wien): Staatsschulden in Zeiten von Corona [Public Dept in Times of Corona]
- Prof. Dr. Helmut Tichy (Wien/Graz): Corona und die Völkerrechtspraxis [Corona and the Practice of International Law]
