Fluchtpunkt Film

Time: 6 p.m.

Films about the flight and expulsion of Germans at the end and in succession of World War II and are not a new phenomenon at the turn of the millennium. Rather, audio-visual narratives have influenced society's approach to this topic since the very beginning.

The study by Alina Laura Tiews explores this hitherto unknown film history of flight and expulsion for the period of the divided Germany after 1945, in which not only the films themselves are analysed, but also unpublished archive material on the history of their production and reception. For example, the study shows how popular feature films and television films helped to shape the various discourses in the GDR and the Federal Republic of Germany and contributed to the integration of German refugees and displaced persons into post-war societies. Despite all the differences, there are also surprising similarities in the cinematic handling of the subject in both German states.

Further information on the event can be found here (in German).
