Information – regardless of its truthfulness – often spreads at high speed and with great reach in social media. States such as Russia deliberately manipulate public opinion in social media, conduct propaganda against the West and deliberately feed anti-American narratives. Especially in the context of the Russian war against the Ukraine, conspiracy narratives and misinformation are booming. Algorithms, internet trolls and bots are taking hold on social media and it is becoming increasingly difficult to debunk disinformation. The revolutionary opportunities for participation offered by the internet are juxtaposed with a dangerous lack of transparency that can even threaten democracy.
The event is organised by the Atlantic Academy in cooperation with the media authority of Rhineland-Palatinate. It is free of charge and takes place with the kind support of the German Federal Foreign Office.
