Growing Up in Digital Societies – Supporting and Protecting Children Online

This lecture by Prof. Dr. Uwe Hasebrink combines two discursive contexts: On the one hand, it takes up the topic of the lecture series on “Communicative Challenges in Digital Societies” organised by the Digital Society Initiative of the University of Zurich. On the other hand, it is part of the OECD-University of Zurich- Expert Consultation “Protection of Children in a Connected World”.

In order to better understand how digital media contribute to children’s growing up and well-being, it is helpful to analyse the contexts of growing up, the social domains, in which children are involved as active participants. The underlying assumption is that media do not have a direct impact on individual children; they rather change the way that social domains, in which children are involved, are constructed – family, school, peer-group and others.

From this perspective, the lecture will deal with current issues related to supporting and protecting children online: What are parents, children, and teachers concerned about with regard to online media? What is the role of media literacy of all actors? How do parents, children, and teachers think about specific measures aiming at the protection of children in online environments?
