Hawai’i International Conference on System Science

Florian Wittner, doctoral candidate at the Hans-Bredow-Institut, and his collegue Christian Kurtz from Universität Hamburg present the paper “The Unlikely Siblings in the GDPR Family: A Techno-Legal Analysis of Major Platforms in the Diffusion of Personal Data in Service Ecosystems” at the Hawai’i International Conference on System Science (HICSS) in Grand Wailea, Maui. The authors address the topic of data protection in platform ecosystems. Using a techno-legal analysis method, they trace the path of private data in complex platform networks of online platforms and apps.

When using apps, users interact in most cases not only with this one app but also with other services, which are connected to this app. This contributes to the diffusion of personal data. The research team wanted to investigate this diffusion of data and used a new techno-legal analysis method to represent the data flow in platform ecosystems. Based on their findings, the authors discuss where solutions for data protection should be integrated in platform ecosystems.

The paper is available for download .

The Hawai’i International Conference on System Science is an annual conference for researchers and professionals in the field of information systems and information technology, and is funded by the University of Hawaii.
