Dr. Stephan Dreyer will give one of the keynote speeches at the annual conference of the
Forum Privatheit on the topic "Recht auf mein Selbst – Digitale Schutzräume kindlicher Entwicklungsphasen [Right to My Self - Digital Protective Spaces of Childhood Development Phases]." Together with
Dr. Claudia Lampert and Jutta Croll (Digital Opportunities Foundation), he will also be giving a lecture the following day on "Heranwachsende im Spannungsfeld von Beobachtung und Selbstoffenbarung [Adolescents in the Field of Tension between Observation and Self-Revelation]."
About the Keynote "Recht auf mein Selbst – Digitale Schutzräume kindlicher Entwicklungsphasen [Right to My Self – Digital Protective Spaces of Childhood Development Phases] "
The datafied society also inevitably digitalises childhood. Is there also a need for child-related shelters in the digital domain? The presentation gives an overview of the derivation of a specific child's right to privacy, its manifestations in digital media environments and the aspects in which child privacy differs from the general right to privacy. It compares these normative digital spaces with empirical insights into the knowledge, concerns and desires of children and adolescents to identify gaps in knowledge and regulation.
About the Presentation "Heranwachsende im Spannungsfeld von Beobachtung und Selbstoffenbarung [Adolescents Caught between Observation and Self-Revelation]"
Research findings on children's and young people's knowledge of privacy, in particular with regard to in-depth knowledge of commercial observation and profiling practices and actors as well as their decision-making capacity in relation to the deliberate and incidental disclosure of data, have so far been incomplete. An ongoing pilot project is currently developing an interdisciplinary approach to identifying normative target values of childhood (personality) development from the perspective of constitutional law and media pedagogy and is organising workshops with adolescents aged 11 to 16. The presentation explains the theoretical approach, elaborates on the resulting research dimensions and gives an overview of the first empirical results.

TOPIC
The BMBF-funded "Forum Privatheit - Selbstbestimmtes Leben in der digitalen Welt [Forum Privacy - Self-Determined Life in the Digital World]" is dedicating this year's annual conference to the topic of data protection and privacy for children and young people in their ( school-based) everyday worlds in order to take into account the social relevance of this topic in politics, family and education. The responsibility of parents towards their children's claims to privacy is currently being discussed under the catchword "Sharenting"; the digitisation campaign in schools is a fundamentally important and frequently debated topic among pupils and teachers. At the same time, 2019 is the 30th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, in which the right of children and adolescents to privacy and data protection plays a key role.
The conference takes up these important debates and continues them with interdisciplinary scholars and stakeholders. To this end, we involve students and teachers, offer our own workshop on data protection issues at school, highlight the significance of data protection for children's rights and discuss numerous good practice models. In order to meet the high social need for orientation with regard to media literacy in youth and schools, we would like to use our conference to deepen debates and offer proposals for solutions.
