Migration Research and Control in the Era of Big Data

Anu Masso, Associate Professor for Big Data in the Social Sciences at the Ragnar Nurkse Department of Innovation and Governance in Tallinn and currently visiting scholar at the postdoctoral college "Algorithmed Public Spheres", addresses the dialectical relationship between social data collection and migration in her Lunch Talk.

About the Presentation

The presentation is based on developments in social data collection, namely that (1) all human activities are transformed into data points, (2) these data are used for migration management, and (3) the structure, access, and use of data are unevenly distributed and disregard diversity.

Anu would like to discuss the following questions: Why does the development of numbering technologies ignore human diversity? How can diversity be understood in a new way, taking into account the infinite diversity of numbering technologies?

The presentation is based on her quantitative and qualitative studies in the areas of algorithmic migration management, securitization of forced migration and selectivity of digital migration policy.

We will meet on 3rd floor at noon punctually. Please bring your own lunch!
