Background to the Freedom of the Press and Freedom of Expression
UNESCO is the only specialised agency of the United Nations to have a mandate to protect freedom of expression and freedom of the press. It supports the development of independent and pluralistic media. In crisis and conflict regions in particular, UNESCO helps free and independent media to promote and shape processes of conflict resolution, democratisation and peacekeeping. With numerous regional projects, it promotes the training of journalists. The security of journalists is also an aspect of freedom of opinion and freedom of the press.
