Putting self-protection and transparency in the foreground instead of including hidden sludges: Design decisions and an open approach to potential risks significantly influence the user experience of digital offerings. Integrating the needs and rights of users - especially children and young people - into the design process from the very beginning can minimise usage risks and at the same time strengthen autonomy, personal responsibility and decision-making competence in an age-appropriate way. The empowerment of safe and competent use of online offerings can thus be anchored in the structure of offerings.
How can the protection of minors from harmful media be made more age- and development-dependent in practice? Different approaches, such as age appropriate design, safety by design or supportive design, provide information about possible solutions.
The media impulse conference is dedicated to design guidelines and concepts that are intended to ensure that age-appropriate and safe use of online offers is considered from the very beginning. The focus is on the discussion of these concepts, current challenges and practical examples. With experts from science and practice, we will discuss regulatory as well as media-ethical and media-pedagogical issues.
