The kick-off event for the project "Dealing with Pets in Social Media" of the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover will take place online from 1:00 p.m. to 5:45 p.m.
Dr. Jan-Hinrik Schmidt will give a presentation on "Social Media. Practices, Media Logics, Social Formations". Participation is free of charge, but registration is required at www.tiho-hannover.de/anmeldung-social-media. Once you have registered, you will receive an MS Teams link in good time before the event.
Dr. Michaela Fels and Alina Stumpf from the Institute for Animal Hygiene, Animal Welfare and Farm Animal Behaviour (ITTN) at the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover analyse animal videos with content relevant to animal welfare on social media platforms such as YouTube, Instagram and TikTok. In doing so, they take a particularly close look at hidden animal suffering. Often, the videos are uploaded and shared on social media uncritically and without knowledge that the content meant suffering for the animals. Many of the supposedly funny animal videos with millions of clicks show content with animal welfare-relevant actions. The researchers want to raise awareness about this phenomenon and develop possible intervention strategies. In addition, they are conducting a Germany-wide online survey on the social perception of animal videos on social media platforms: www.tiho-hannover.de/umgang-haustiere
