Wer bewacht die Wächter?

PD Dr. Jan-Hinrik Schmidt will be a guest from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the online event "Who Guards the Guardians? Between 'Censorship' and Freedom of Expression in Social Media" at the Georg von Vollmar Academy. He will give the presentation "Between the Promise of Participation and Algorithmic Power. How Social Media Change Opinion Formation and Social Cohesion".

About the Event

"Social media have become a place where opinions are formed. Many people use the networks to inform themselves about political and social events. Fake news plays an increasingly important role in disinformation and manipulation. We want to discuss freedom of opinion in social media together. The corporations, as owners of the platforms, are the "guardians" of their content and decide themselves which content, for example, is blocked. This gives them a great deal of power. Is free discourse and the formation of public opinion possible at all? And who monitors the guardians and their rules? We will be considering the situation on the internet from a legal, journalistic and media sociological perspective and will be asking exciting questions about freedom of opinion online."
