Jan-Hinrik Schmidt discusses social media as places of opinion formation in social discourse in a conversation with journalist Dennis Leiffels of the Y-Kollektiv, a young, investigative video format of ARD and ZDF. Diana Huth will moderate the discussion.
Through YouTube, Facebook or WhatsApp, the opinion-forming process is increasingly shifting to the digital world. Classic journalism is thus coming under pressure and has to prove itself against the competition of modern online journalism and its strategies. Young people in particular are making use of the wide range of information available on the Internet. The subjective conveyance of social content plays a key role in this. Is the political discourse in the digital space so effective because it is more personal and authentic? What opportunities and risks do changes in the opinion-forming process entail for society and democracy?
