HBI Researchers at re:publica 2022

Christina Dinar and Anna von Garmissen will be part of re:publica, one of the most important digital conferences in Germany. It will take place in Berlin from 8 to 10 June 2022 with the title Any Way The Wind Blows.

Anna von Garmissen will moderate the panel "Public value broadcasting: Any Way the Content Flows". She will discuss possibilities of public access to news and education with Christian Humborg, executive director of Wikimedia, and ZDF programme director Nadine Bilke. Recently, German public broadcasting licensed parts of its content under a Creative Commons licence for the first in its history. ZDF made high-quality animations available. ARD and Deutschlandradio will soon follow suit and make content from their extensive archives available under a Creative Commons licence.
8 June 2022, 12:00 - 12:30 p.m., Stage 2

Christina Dinar will present her study on niche platforms and the forms of content moderation practised on them the following day. Niche platforms are hardly considered in the current discourse on platform governance and the corresponding legislation (NetzDG, DSA), says Christina Dinar. Yet interesting community-based approaches to content moderation can be observed on smaller platforms in particular, which could be a successful alternative in the balancing act between granting freedom of expression on the one hand and curbing hate speech on the other.
9 June 2022, 4:45-5:15 p.m., Stage 2

The re:publica has been held annually in Berlin since 2007. It is one of the most important conferences for internet and society.
