Abstract
Population-representative studies on news usage, such as the recently published issue of the Reuters Digital News Report, paint an ambivalent picture: Young Internet users between the ages of 18 and 24 have only a low level of general interest in news - at least in classic "hard news".
Most of them get their news information most likely via social media. Although platforms such as Instagram, YouTube, Facebook and the like are not used specifically for searching for or receiving news, young users come into contact with news content by chance and thus feel sufficiently informed - as far as their needs are concerned - about current events in Germany and the world. Nevertheless, adolescents and young adults hardly trust news on social media, which also means that "news" is associated with journalistic sources.
