Social media make it easier for people to share information of all kinds and to maintain social relationships. They became an essential part of digital communication in recent years and changed structures of the public but also the daily exchange about private topics. Their communicative architecture fuels hopes for a better social participation along with wiorries that more and more areas of life are commercialised and under surveillance. The handbook presents the current state of research and debate on the use, the social embedding and the consequences of social media in the field of communication science and associated social sciences.
