Uwe Hasebrink retired at the end of September 2021. For more than 35 years, he worked at the Leibniz Institute for Media Research | Hans-Bredow-Institut; first as a research consultant, then for many years as a scientific director and a member of the Board of Directors.
The brochure "Media Environments. On the Trail of Uwe Hasebrink" is intended to do justice to the extremely modest person of Uwe Hasebrink. It pays tribute to him and his work rather indirectly and looks more at the fields in which he was and is active. The texts by companions and colleagues are intended to answer questions such as “In which field/topic area has Uwe Hasebrink left his mark?” and “What does this mean for this area today and in the future?”.
The authors write about fields of research that he has shaped, about perspectives that are important to him, about his characteristics and idiosyncrasies. Of course, this always says something about the writers' relationship to Uwe Hasebrink - and it should do so. However, the concept ensures that the texts do not have a retrospective-final gesture. In any case, we hope that the exchange with him will by no means end abruptly in October 2021.
The texts also reflect decades of the Institute's history. Uwe Hasebrink has left his mark on the Institute - both internally and externally. His students and colleagues in academia and practice appreciate his well thought-out and relevant impulses. He has established an appreciative culture that can also be felt by outsiders. We will try to maintain this and say, “Thank you, Uwe!”
