This handbook provides an overview of current trends and issues in media systems within the European Union. Based on Hallin and Mancini's famous model for analyzing media systems ("Comparing Media Systems," 2004), the book examines Europe's media systems in different regions: Northern, Northwestern, Eastern and Southern Europe.
The two HBI researchers Volker Grassmuck and Barbara Thomaß collaborated on the book. Their chapter is devoted to Northwestern Europe (Ireland, the United Kingdom, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Germany, and Austria). In this chapter, they describe the main characteristics of media systems, the evolution of markets, and the evolution of trust in the media. They also examine links between the media and political parties in each country, journalistic professionalism, and the role of the state.
The book is a result of our Horizon 2020 project EUMEPLAT: European Media Platforms. It was edited by Stylianos Papathanassopoulos and Andrea Miconi and is available as open access. The printed version will be published on 18 September 2023.
