From 2016 until April 2018, Lies van Roessel worked as a junior researcher at the Hans-Bredow-Institut and coordinated the cooperation of the institute with the Department of Informatics at the Universität Hamburg, in order to develop new research projects on 'typologies of algorithms' and 'user development in the application of feedback mechanisms'.
She studied Communication Studies and New Media Studies at Utrecht University (NL), with a specialization in Game Studies, for which she also took courses at the IT University of Copenhagen. In 2008, she graduated with a master’s thesis on Computer Game Literacy.
From 2008 until 2013, Lies has worked as a teacher and researcher for HKU University of the Arts Utrecht at the school of Games & Interaction. Here she looked into applied (serious) games, especially games for health care and education, and their development processes. From 2014 to 2016, she worked at the Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society (HIIG) within the project Circulation of Cultural Goods Here she focused on how innovation and imitation are regulated in the games sector, both by legal and social norms.
Furthermore, she is a PhD student at the Leuphana University, where she writes her dissertation on business models in the games industry.
