A new practical guide on supporting OA publications provides extensive knowledge for successful and science-driven journal publishing.
Cindy Hesse, librarian and OA expert at the HBI, contributed to it. In the section "Governance and Legal Form", she and other experts from the field of publishing explore the question of which sustainable organisational approaches ensure the existence, predictability, and quality of a scientific journal.
The guide was edited by Marcel Wrzesinski.

In the course of the open access transformation, science-led journals are confronted with numerous challenges: In addition to financial and infrastructural support, these journals need "capacity building", in other words, help to help themselves, especially to close knowledge gaps in the field of scientific publishing. The guidelines are a contribution to this "capacity building". Designed as a practical resource, they are intended to guide journals and publishing institutions in a needs-oriented manner and to support them in the further development, professionalisation and consolidation of their publishing activities. The set of six practical guides is the main result of the "Scholar-led Plus" project at the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society and funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. In addition to the practical resources, the project has developed strategic recommendations, based on a multi-stage Delphi survey, which prospectively contour the field of scholar-led publishing. To ensure the greatest possible usability by science-led journals and projects, the guidelines were conceived and written in cooperation with experts from the field of publishing.
The document, as the sum of its parts, conveys basic knowledge about technical processes, tools and infrastructures, but also links this with information about copyright aspects and the demand for data protection. It emphasises the relevance of editorial work and gives recommendations for optimising processes, whereby the areas of scholarly communication and dissemination of content, which have often been underrepresented up to now, are considered separately. Last but not least, administrative processes are addressed. In addition to costs for journals and possibilities for funding and promotion, strategies of good governance for journals are described.
